My first memory of Seve was live on the BBC. I was at home on a Saturday watching with my Dad, I’d not played golf before that - in fact my golfing experience before this was picking up his Campbell of Canada blades in the garage and thinking they looked like weird, green handles! That day I’m not sure what it was but I was in for the long haul, I wanted to be just like that, sharp, charismatic, funny (the jury’s out on that one) and above all a Professional Golfer. I’ve also been known to hit a few wild shots in the past but love trying to dissect a route and escape these positions. Later I was lucky enough to see Seve play on many occasions. He was an absolute golfing God, an inspiration, he will always be to me my hero, golf owes him so much as it does many others. I had a lovely moment in the Professional Shop a couple of months ago when Alan, one of members, told me why he played golf. He simply said “Fresh air and friends Kevin”, how good is that?
Sport, golf, the European success in the Ryder Cup, Majors and the all round growth of the game is testament to Seve’s vision, sacrifice and massive heart. It’s Masters Week Senor Ballesteros, I drive on to be better, Muchas Gracias!
