Hello Golfers,

Golf's greatest rivalries

Did you know?

An Amazing Coincidence

Our President, Tony Hoskins, and Manager Andrew were chatting last summer about the courses they had played over the years and Tony mentioned The Belfry and that he had played it in 1994 representing the Golf Foundation in the Kubota Golf Challenge. Andrew immediately said that he had played in the same event around the same time. On further discussion, they realised they had both played in the same match and for the same team back in 1994. An amazing coincidence.

The Kubota Challenge was an annual match between the Golf Foundation, the England Golf Union, the Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), and the Golf Club Secretaries (AGCS). Tony had been invited to play for the Golf Foundation due to the money he had helped raise organising the Pro-Am here at Lee-on-the-Solent. Andrew was invited for similar reasons at the Club where he worked then.

The greenkeepers team had won the event almost every year but, in 1994, it was the Golf Foundation team that ran out winners after defeating the greenkeepers in the final. Tony recently unearthed the photo below, which is of the team being presented with the trophy and with them all receiving a commemorative bowl. Tony is furthest left, and Andrew is 3rd from the left. Both Tony and Andrew still have their bowls!

If any of you have a photo and a story that you would like to share with other members, please feel free to send them through to Andrew at manager@leegolf.co.uk.

An amazing piece of history

John Paxton has unearthed the attached photo of the clubhouse circa 1920. Fantastic to see this image John thank you, that looks like a fantastic car, does any one know the make and model ?.
