Ladies welcome the new ladies 

The date of Wednesday, 14 October was the first of a few scheduled “integration sessions” whereby members of the Ladies’ section played a fun Texas Scramble with some of the ladies from Kevin’s group lesson.

Kevin teaches a group of ladies on Wednesday's between 13:00pm - 14:00pm each week. There are approximately twelve ladies that participate in these group lessons. 

Some of these ladies have been playing a while and have recently taken up a flexible membership at the club and have even acquired handicaps. Other members of the ladies group may have less experience, being relatively new to golf. 

The purpose of these fun sessions is to encourage these ladies to continue with their golf, hopefully, progress to taking up a membership one day, but mostly to meet some of us ladies and get to know us and experience the more social/fun side of golf.  

The Pro Shop reserved some tee-times on Wednesday, 14 November, the first tee time being 14:32pm. This enabled the ladies to have a short break following their lesson before going out on the course. 

We played nine holes in a Texas Scramble format.  

There were six members of the Ladies’ Section on this Wednesday:

Anne Chamber-Glover, Denise Steel, Gill Goodrum, Barbara Bell, Tess McGlade, Pam Dupree. 

There were two members of Kevin’s ladies group:

KP Torlot and Kate Dymott.

The format for this Texas Scramble was step- aside meaning that the person’s drive or shot we chose would not take the next shot. We counted the total strokes for the nine holes for each group – just to provide a little “competition”. 

The intention of these FUN sessions is to give Kevin’s ladies group the opportunity to meet members of the Ladies’ section and have a chat along the way. There will be more of these sessions scheduled; the next one on Wednesday, 28 November.

Remembering Rod 

Thank you for all of your kindness in purchasing tickets in our Remembering Rod Raffle, if you missed the story please read on about this great man.

Friend to many here and inspiration and support to so many Junior golfers from beginner to world-class elite, Rod always created an environment to grow within.

We sadly lost an amazing man this year in Rod Howes, Rod was a member with us and was always a huge support to junior golf. Rod and I had many chats about his friend and my coach in the early days' Alan Bridge, he bought in some images he had taken of them both and I might say “Very fine Technique” back in the 1960s on his Kodak Brownie Box camera and we shared some amazing stories I’ll never forget.

We laughed that once you'd met Mr Bridge you'd never forget him.

Rod had recently purchased a Motocaddy trolley and Phil Hawkes has asked if we could hold a raffle for it and donate the money to our junior section here at the club.

Thank you so much to Rod's family for this extremely kind gesture. Although Rod may no longer be striping the ball down our first fairway, he always did and is still making a difference. Thank you, sir.

Tickets are £5 each and are available in the Professional shop from this Saturday, the trolley comes with a warranty from Motocaddy. All proceeds go to the Lee-On-The-Solent Junior Section.

Tyrrell Hatton followed up his impressive BMW PGA Championship win with a T3 on the PGA Tour over the weekend - not bad after a late dash across the pond following his Wentworth triumph! In Europe, Aaron Rai has finished first, second and third over his last four events.

Treat your feet

Bounce made simple

You’ll often hear golf commentators say “the bounce is your friend” but what is ‘bounce’ on a wedge? Well, it refers to the angle of the leading edge and plays an important role in how your wedge interacts with the turf through impact. 

High vs. low bounce wedges

As the image shows above, the higher the wedge bounce the more the leading edge is off the ground and pointing upwards. 

But how does this help you? Well, having the correct bounce for the course conditions and your swing type will offer additional forgiveness and promote a better strike, which is something that we can talk you through more in-store.
